Since 1901 the University of Portland has devoted itself to an education of the heart and mind by focusing on three central elements: teaching, faith, and service. Since the day it opened in September 1901 with 52 boys and 8 professors, the University has grown to a vibrant intellectual community of 3,500 students and 316 professors. Today the University is ranked among the top 5 schools in the West by U.S. News and World Report and boasts some of the finest teachers in the country, including a Carnegie Foundation National Professor of the Year (Kate Regan) and three Carnegie Foundation State Professors of the Year (Karen Eifler, Becky Houck, and Terry Favero).
